单词 fallow deer
释义

fallow deern.

Brit. /ˈfaləʊ ˌdɪə/, U.S. /ˈfæloʊ ˌdɪ(ə)r/
Forms: see fallow adj.1 and n.2 and deer n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fallow adj.1, deer n.
Etymology: < fallow adj.1 + deer n. Compare red deer n.It has been suggested that an otherwise unattested Old English noun *fealu ( < fallow adj.1), denoting a species of deer, is reflected in the first element of the place names fealuwes lea, Northamptonshire (944; now Fawsley), and Faleslei, Berkshire (1086; now Fawley), but the interpretation of these place names is disputed.
1. A medium-sized Eurasian deer typically found in woodland and at woodland edges, Dama dama, having a reddish- or greyish-brown coat, spotted with white in summer, with a white rump and a black line on the back and tail, and with palmate antlers in the male. The fallow deer is thought to be native to Asia Minor, but has been dispersed throughout much of Europe by human agency, beginning in ancient times; it was later introduced to most of the other continents.See also fallow adj.1 2.
