单词 anhungered
释义

anhungeredadj.

Brit. /ˌanˈhʌŋɡəd/, U.S. /ˌænˈhəŋɡərd/
Forms:

α. Middle English–1500s anhongred, Middle English–1800s anhungred, 1500s– anhungered.

β. late Middle English onhungred.

Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: ahungered adj.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of ahungered adj. (although this is first attested slightly later; compare earlier afingered adj., ofhungered adj.) due to reanalysis of the initial element, arising from confusion of a- prefix4 ( < of- prefix) with a- prefix3 ( < an- prefix1, on- prefix). Compare Old English gehyngrod (adjective) hungry, starving (less common than ofhungered adj.), and perhaps also the prepositional phrase Old English on hungre , early Middle English on hunger in a state of hunger. Compare also later enhunger v. Compare further forhunger v., forhungered adj. at forhunger v. Derivatives. With the β. forms compare on- prefix. They appear to be rare. Sometimes written as two words (e.g. quot. 1841 at sense 1; compare hungered adj.).
Now rare (archaic and poetic in later use).
1. Reduced to hunger; in a state of hunger; hungry; = ahungered adj. Chiefly in predicative use.
