Etymology: < French famille verte (1849 or earlier in a text by A. Jacquemart: compare quot. 1868 at sense A.) < famille family n. + verte , feminine of vert vert n.¹ Compare famille rose n.The Chinese name for this style of porcelain is Kāngxī wǔcǎi ( < Kāngxī , the name of the Kangxi emperor + wǔcǎi , literally ‘five coloured’: see wu ts'ai n.) and also sùsāncǎi , literally ‘plain three coloured’ (compare san ts'ai n.).
