Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferreus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferreus (see ferreous adj.) + -an suffix. Compare earlier ferreal adj., ferreous adj. N.E.D. (1895) gives the pronunciation as (fe·rĭăn) /ˈfɛrɪən/.
Obsolete. rare.
As hard as iron; iron-like. Also figurative. Cf. ferreous adj. 2.In quot. 1828: consisting of iron.
