Festinon.1

Brit. /fɛˈstʌɪnəʊ/, U.S. /fɛˈstaɪˌnoʊ/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin festino.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin festino, denoting a logical mood (13th cent. in a British source) < F- (in Ferio Ferio n.) + E , the symbol for a universal negative (see E n.1 5) + s- (in simplex conversio : see simple conversion at conversion n. 4) + -t- , arbitrary element, apparently for euphony + I , the symbol for the particular affirmative proposition (see I n.1 4) + -n- , arbitrary element, apparently for euphony + O , the symbol for a particular negative (see O n.1 4), perhaps after classical Latin festīnō , 1st person singular present indicative active of festīnāre to make haste, to hurry (see festinate v.). Compare the discussion at mood n.2 2.The mnemonic term (introduced by Petrus Hispanus, c1250) designates the third mood of the second figure of syllogisms, in which the major premise is a universal negative, the minor premise a particular affirmative, and the conclusion a particular negative.
Logic.
A mnemonic term for: the third mood of the second syllogistic figure, in which a particular negative conclusion is drawn from a universal negative major premise and a particular affirmative minor premise (the middle term being the predicate of both premises). See mood n.2 2a.Quot. 1551 illustrates Festino's two premises and conclusion as individual elements.
