Etymology: < French femme de chambre (1531 or earlier in Middle French) < femme femme n. + de de prep. +chambre chamber n.In plural form femmes de chambre after the French plural form. N.E.D. (1895) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (fam də ʃāṅbr) /fam də ʃɑ̃br/.
