Etymology: Probably the reflex of an unattested Old English *acorian < a- prefix¹ + Old English *corian , cognate with Old Dutch coron to taste (Middle Dutch coren to try, test, to examine, to taste), Old High German korōn to try, test, to examine, to taste (Middle High German koren ) < an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of choose v., after the operation of Verner's Law. Compare earlier achoose v. Compare also Old English acoren (adjective) choice, excellent (use as adjective of acoren , past participle of acēosan achoose v.), and its derivative acorenlic worthy of choice.The existence of Old English *acorian is probably implied by the adjective acoriendlic worthy of choice. Perhaps compare also early modern German †erkorn to select (1388 in an apparently isolated attestation; probably an alteration of †erkiesen achoose v. after its past participle erkoren).
