1894 ‘Tourniquet’ in First Aid Sept. 15/1 I have noticed that a word has been wanted to replace the ugly expression ‘ambulance man’, ‘ambulance pupil’, &c., so I have ventured to coin a new word ‘First-Aider’ to supply the want. The definition of this word is—A person who has received a certificate from an authorised association that he (or she) is qualified to render first aid.
1897 Daily News 1 Oct. 7/2 There was a large attendance, and there appeared to be an abundance of willing ‘First Aiders’ thirsting to put their newly-acquired knowledge to a practical test.
