单词 antholite
释义

antholiten.

Brit. /ˈanθəlʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈænθəˌlaɪt/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: antho- comb. form, -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < antho- comb. form + -lite comb. form1. In sense 1 as an alteration of anthophyllite n. (see note). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Antholithes (A. Brongniart 1822, in Mémoires du Muséum d'hist. nat. (1822) 239; compare French antholithe on page 238 of the same source), probably a specific use of Antholithus (1768 in Linnaeus).Sense 1 apparently arose from a misapprehension by Weston (see quot. 1806 at sense 1) of German Nelke clove (Middle High German neilke ), clove-gillyflower (15th cent.) as referring to the flower rather than to the spice; Schumacher, the coiner of the etymon of anthophyllite n. (see discussion at that entry), calls the mineral ‘von nelkenbrauner Farbe’, i.e. ‘having a clove-brown colour’. German Nelke is < Middle Low German nēgelken clove, lit. ‘little nail’ < nāgel nail n. + -ken -kin suffix; for the semantic motivation of the name of the spice, see discussion at clove n.2
