Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin anthologicon ; anthology n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: As noun (compare α. forms) < classical Latin anthologicon writings on the subject of flowers (Pliny), representing an otherwise unattested Greek form *ἀνθολογικῶν , genitive plural of *ἀνθολογικόν , neuter of *ἀνθολογικός < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθολογία anthology n. + -ικός -ic suffix (the form anthologick in quot. 1656 at sense A. shows omission of the ending after words in -ic suffix). As adjective < anthology n. (compare anthology n. 3) + -ic suffix; compare anthological adj. 2, and also -logic comb. form.
