Etymology: < fluoro- comb. form + -meter comb. form2. In sense 1 after German Fluorometer (O. W. F. Oettel 1886, in Zeitschr. f. analytische Chemie 25 505). With sense 3 compare fluorimeter n. 2.
1. Chemistry. An apparatus devised for the measurement of the fluorine present in silicates by the volumetric analysis of silicon fluoride gas produced by reaction with sulphuric acid; (also) a similar apparatus adapted for other analyses. Now rare.

2. Medicine. An apparatus used in conjunction with a fluoroscope to locate accurately the position of foreign objects within the body. Now historical.The fluorometer consisted of a set of curved metallic pieces, a metal grid, and a special table on which the patient lay. The arms of the metal pieces were lined up with the foreign object in the body using a fluoroscope, and the grid was used to ascertain its location.
