Etymology: < post-classical Latin anelytrus (1653 or earlier; 1542 or earlier as anelytra , neuter plural, designating a group of insects; < ancient Greek ἀνέλυτρος sheathless (used of insects by Aristotle; < ἀν- an- prefix² + ἔλυτρον elytron n.)) + -ous suffix.In quot. 1910 probably independently < an- prefix² + elytrous adj. Compare the following earlier use, in an English context, of post-classical Latin (later also scientific Latin) Anelytra, name of a group of insects :1661 R.
