Etymology: < foot n. + rope n.1In quot. OE at sense 1 glossing classical Latin prōpēs (rare; < prō- pro- prefix1 + pēs foot: see -ped comb. form), explained in Isidore Origines 19. 4. 3 (the probable source) as ‘rope by which the foot of the sail is tied’.
1. Nautical. (a) A bolt-rope sewn to the lower edge of a sail. (b) A rope attached to a yard on which a sailor stands when furling or reefing. Cf. foot line n. 4.
