单词 footfell
释义

footfelln.

Brit. /ˈfʊtfɛl/, U.S. /ˈfʊtˌfɛl/, Scottish English /ˈfutfɛl/
Forms:

α. Middle English fotfell, 1800s– footfell; Scottish pre-1700 fitfell, pre-1700 futefell, pre-1700 futevel, pre-1700 futfell.

β. Scottish pre-1700 fitfail, pre-1700 fitfaill, pre-1700 fitfeal, pre-1700 fitfeall, pre-1700 fuitfaill, pre-1700 futefaill, pre-1700 futefal, pre-1700 futfaill, pre-1700 futfale, pre-1700 futfall, pre-1700 futvale, pre-1700 fytwale.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: foot n., an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Apparently < foot n. + a second element of uncertain and disputed identity. Compare Dutch †voetvel (1551), Middle Low German vōtvel (1441 as foethfelle), both denoting lambskin imported from Scotland. The second element of the compound has been identified as fell n.1, but it has been objected that such a derivation presents both phonological and semantic problems, since on the one hand it does not account well for the β. forms, and on the other it is unclear why this kind of lambskin should be thought of as ‘foot skin’. It has therefore been argued that this element may rather show an apparently unattested Middle English reflex of Old English (Anglian) fæll (West Saxon fiell , fyll ) fall, death (see fall n.2 and discussion at that entry), the skin having been taken from lambs which have recently fallen at the feet of their mothers in birth (perhaps compare later fell n.5 1b, fall n.2 15, also with reference to the birthing of lambs). In either case the range of forms also suggests association of the second element with fall v. For further discussion see M. T. Löfvenberg Contrib. Middle Eng. Lexicogr. & Etymol. (1946) 19–21.
Scottish. Now historical.
A kind of dressed lambskin formerly exported from Scotland; spec. one taken from a lamb between the time of its castration and its weaning, or from a lamb that has died soon after birth. Also more fully footfell skin.
