Etymology: < two different sources: Middle English forrier is < Old French forrier , (see also fourrier n., furrier n.1) < medieval Latin type *fodrārius , < *fodro fodder (see forage n.); Middle English forrour , forreour , is < Old French forreor , agent-noun < forrer to forage. The two words coalesced, the trisyllabic forms alone surviving, and were regarded as the agent-noun belonging to foray v.
