Origin: Probably a borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic ʿangareb.

Etymology: Probably < a Sudanese Arabic variant (the precise form of which is uncertain) of Yemenite Arabic ʿangareb, ʿangarēb, ʿangarāb, of unknown origin. Compare Nobiin àngàréé ‘wooden bed’, which is sometimes cited as the etymon of the Sudanese Arabic word, but is more likely to be a borrowing from it.Nobiin is a Nubian language of southern Egypt and northern Sudan.

In Sudan, Egypt, and some other East African countries: a light movable bedstead consisting of a wooden framework with a base of woven rope, animal hide, etc., also used as a sofa.
