Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lēgifer.
Etymology: < classical Latin lēgifer (adjective) law-giving, in post-classical Latin also (noun) legislator (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian) < lēgi- , alternative stem of lēx law (see legal adj.) + -fer -fer comb. form.Attested earlier in an English context as the byname of one of the Seven Sages of Rome:c1460 (?c1400) Tale of Beryn l. 794 The first was I-clepid Sother legifeer..‘man bereing þe lawe’.
Obsolete (historical and rare after 17th cent.).
A legislator, a lawgiver.
