单词 freewoman
释义

freewomann.

Brit. /ˈfriːˌwʊmən/, U.S. /ˈfriˌwʊmən/
Inflections: Plural freewomen.
Forms: see free adj., n., and adv. and woman n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: free adj., woman n., wife n.
Etymology: < free adj. + woman n. Compare Old English frēowīf freewoman ( < free adj. + wife n.), Middle High German vrīwīp freewoman (early modern German freiweib , in later use in sense ‘prostitute’). Compare also Dutch vrijvrouw member of the lower nobility (1521, now historical), Middle High German vrīvrouwe freewoman (German Freifrau , now only as a title of lower nobility). Compare earlier freeman n.
1. A woman who is (personally or politically) free; esp. a woman who is not a slave. Cf. freeman n. 1.In later use the one-word form has tended to be used exclusively with reference to freedom from slavery, whereas when referring to political freedom the two words are more likely to be used as a transparent collocation.
