Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fulgor.
Etymology: < classical Latin fulgor brightness, brilliance, radiance, flash, flash of lightning, shining object, splendour, glory < fulgēre to shine (see fulgent adj.) + -or -or suffix. Compare Old French fulgour , Middle French (rare) fulgueur splendour (14th cent.), flash of lightning (late 15th cent.), and also Catalan fulgor (15th cent.), Spanish fulgor (early 15th cent.), Italian fulgore (a1321), all in sense ‘splendour’. Compare earlier fulgence n., and also earlier fulgur n.
In later use chiefly poetic.
Dazzling brightness; splendour; a bright light, a dazzling beam. Also figurative.
