单词 apterygota
释义

Apterygotan.

Brit. /eɪˌtɛrᵻˈɡəʊtə/, U.S. /eɪˌtɛrəˈɡoʊdə/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek πτερυγωτός , -a suffix2.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + ancient Greek πτερυγωτός winged (see pterygote adj.) + -a suffix2, originally (in quot. 1887) after German Apterygoten, plural noun (E. Haase 1886, in Tageblatt der 59. Versammlung deutscher Naturforscher u. Ärzte zu Berlin vom 18. bis 24. Sept. 1886 303). In later use after scientific Latin Apterygota, subclass name ( A. Lang Lehrb. der vergleichenden Anat. (1888) 453 (in a German context); itself after German Apterygoten ). Compare earlier Pterygota n.
Entomology.
With plural or singular agreement: a subclass of insects which never evolved wings and do not undergo metamorphosis. With plural agreement (also in form apterygota): members of this subclass collectively; wingless insects. Cf. Pterygota n.The subclass Apterygota comprises the orders Archaeognatha and Thysanura, and the extinct order Monura. It formerly included also the wingless orders Collembola, Diplura, and Protura, but because these have the mouthparts retracted into the head they are now usually placed in the class Entognatha.
