Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fulmen.
Etymology: < classical Latin fulmen lightning that strikes, thunderbolt, also in figurative use < fulgere to shine (see fulgent adj.) + -men (see -ment suffix).
A thunderbolt, esp. (in later use) as the attribute of the Roman god Jupiter; a symbolic representation of this (in art, on a coin, etc.). Also figurative.
