单词 self-born
释义

self-bornadj.

Brit. /ˌsɛlfˈbɔːn/, U.S. /ˌsɛlfˈbɔrn/
Forms: see self- prefix and born adj.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: self- prefix, born adj.
Etymology: < self- prefix + born adj.
1. Of a person or other being: born of himself or herself. Of an object, attribute, condition, idea, etc.: generated by or originating from the person or thing possessing it. N.E.D. (1911) interpreted quot. a1616 as showing one self at self pron., adj., n., and adv. Phrases 1, but given that the speaker is Time, the father of the Hours in Greek mythology, most modern editors of Shakespeare interpret it as showing this sense. There may be a play on words with borne adj.1 2 in this quot. and in quot. a1644.
