Etymology: < Spanish garnacha (1613 as guarnacha with reference to an Italian wine) < Italian vernaccia vernaccia n.
A (usually sweet) red or rosé wine made from a variety of grape grown in Spain; (also) this variety of grape.The same variety is elsewhere known as grenache. Cf. grenache n.

1927 A. I. Perold Treat. Viticulture v. 276 Grenache noir. Synonyms.—Grenache, Garnacho (Rioja, Spain)... In 1910 I imported it into South Africa from Spain (Rioja) as Garnacho and from Montpellier as Grenache noir. Both turned out to be identical.
