Etymology: < French gadolinium (P.-É. Lecoq de Boisbaudran 1886, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 102 902, with reference to correspondence from J. C. G. de Marignac) < gadolin- (in gadolinite gadolinite n.) + -ium -ium suffix.

A soft, silvery-white, metallic chemical element of the lanthanide series, atomic number 64. Symbol Gd.Gadolinium occurs in monazite, gadolinite, and some other minerals and is used in nuclear technology and radiography (on account of its ability to absorb neutrons) and in some magnetic alloys.
