Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French godron.
Etymology: < French godron, †gaudron, †gauderon ornament consisting of a series of convex curves (1369 in Middle French as goderon ), round fold on a piece of clothing or embroidery (1577 in Middle French) < a first element of uncertain origin, also found in godet (see godet n.) + -eron, diminutive suffix.
A decorative pattern consisting of a series of convex curves or arcs joined or overlapping at the ends, often used in the ornamentation of gold and silver plate, or as a border in architecture, ceramics, etc. Also in singular: an individual curve or arc in such a pattern.Sometimes compared or contrasted with fluting (fluting n. 3).
