Any of numerous small live-bearing fishes of the genus Gambusia (family Poeciliidae), native to mangrove creeks and brackish waters in southern North America; esp. the mosquito fish, G. affinis. Also (in form Gambusia): the genus itself. Gambusia affinis has been introduced in various parts of the world as a means of controlling mosquitos, and is now considered to be an invasive species in many of these locations. Some species of Gambusia are kept as aquarium fish.
