Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Gambusia.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Gambusia, genus name ( F. Poey Memorias sobre la historia natural de la Isla de Cuba (1851) I. 382), apparently < gambus- (in Cuban Spanish gambusino nothing, of uncertain origin) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹; the semantic motivation for the name is unclear: Poey cites the idiom pescar gambusinos to go fishing without catching anything, to chase after the impossible.

Any of numerous small live-bearing fishes of the genus Gambusia (family Poeciliidae), native to mangrove creeks and brackish waters in southern North America; esp. the mosquito fish, G. affinis. Also (in form Gambusia): the genus itself. Gambusia affinis has been introduced in various parts of the world as a means of controlling mosquitos, and is now considered to be an invasive species in many of these locations. Some species of Gambusia are kept as aquarium fish.
