Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin geoscopia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin geoscopia (1654 in a work title, or earlier) < geo- geo- comb. form + -scopia -scopy comb. form. Compare Italian †geoscopia (1637 or earlier in a work title), also French (now hist.) géoscopie geomancy (1732 or earlier).
Obsolete. rare.
Knowledge of the soil or of geographical features obtained by visual observation.

1857 N. Amer. Rev. Jan. 118/1 Geognosy or Geoscopy..constitutes that division of the landscape art which is usually treated under the heads of ground, rocks, and water.
