Etymology: < German adj. + catholic n.; as adjective originally after German deutschkatholisch, adjective (1844 in this sense), as noun originally after Deutschkatholik, noun (1845 or earlier), both with reference to the movement led by J. Ronge. Compare New Catholic adj. and New Catholic n.
Now historical.

B. n.
A member of a religious group in Germany that separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1844. Cf. New Catholic n.The group separated from the Roman Catholic Church following the excommunication of Johannes Ronge, who became one of its founding members. The German Catholics (initially also called the New Catholics) had a simple doctrine focusing on the authority of the Bible, rejecting the authority of the Pope, and acknowledging only two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. By 1860, many of the German Catholic congregations had dissolved, and the majority of German Catholics joined Protestant churches. The movement was largely superseded by the Old Catholic Church (see Old Catholic n. 2).In quot. 18451 the German Catholic in question is Johannes Ronge, the founder of the movement; the sense may be 'a Roman Catholic who is German' rather than this sense.
