The German Catholics (initially also called the New Catholics) had a simple doctrine focusing on the authority of the Bible, rejecting the authority of the Pope, and acknowledging only two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. By 1860, many of the German Catholic congregations had dissolved, and the majority of German Catholics joined Protestant churches. The movement was largely superseded by the Old Catholic Church (see Old Catholic n. 2).In quot. 1845¹ the German Catholic in question is Johannes Ronge, the founder of the movement; the sense may be 'a Roman Catholic who is German' rather than this sense.
