Forms: Also 1500s–1600s ? gugelle, 1700s ghazel, 1800s gazel (irregular gazhal).
Etymology: < French gazelle (Old French gazel, recorded in 14th cent.) = Spanish gacela, gacele, gacel, Portuguese gazella, Italian gazzella, < Arabic ghazāl, which probably passed first into Spanish and thence to the other Romance tongues.
a. A small delicately-formed antelope, of which the typical species ( Gazella dorcas) is a native of Northern Africa; other varieties are found in various parts of Africa and Asia. The gazelle is especially noted for the grace of its movements and the softness of its eyes.
