Etymology: German, < gegen opposite + schein shine, glow; first used technically by T. J. C. A. Brorsen 1854, in Unterhaltungen im Gebiete der Astron. 17 May 156, after an earlier use in the same connection by F. H. A. von Humboldt c1803, published in his Kosmos (1845) I. 144.
Astronomy.
A patch of very faint nebulous light occurring in the ecliptic opposite the sun. Cf. counter-glow n.

1880 Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 120 442 The gegenschein is an extremely faint spot of light some 7° in diameter, lying in the zodiacal band.
1888 C. A. Young Text-bk. Gen. Astron. 347 There is said to be in it [sc. the zodiacal light] at the point exactly opposite to the sun a patch a few degrees in diameter of slightly brighter luminosity, called the ‘Gegenschein’ or ‘counter-glow’.
