Etymology: < (i) French géode (1752 denoting the rock body; the use with reference to the cavity itself is apparently not paralleled until later: 1847 or earlier; earlier as †géodes (1556 in Middle French, obsolete after 1759)), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin geōdēs, kind of precious stone (Pliny) < ancient Greek γεώδης earthy < γῆ earth (see geo- comb. form) + -ώδης -ode comb. form1. Compare Spanish geode (1569), Italian geode (1563).In α. forms directly < classical Latin geōdēs. In γ. forms (e.g. in quot. 1845) with alteration of the ending by association with -oid suffix.
