Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Appell.
Etymology: < German Appell muster, roll-call (1695 in a military context; now more commonly in sense ‘appeal’) < French appel call, appeal, muster (see appeal n.).
Now historical.
In the First World War (1914–18) and esp. the Second World War (1939–45): a roll-call taken in a German prisoner-of-war camp or concentration camp.
