Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish giolla rua.
Etymology: < Irish giolla rua (formerly giolla ruadh ) < giolla young man, retainer, servant (see ghillie n.) + rua red adj., apparently so called on account of its reddish skin.The Irish word may also (additionally) contain an allusion to the surname Mac Giolla Ruadh , lit. ‘son of the red(-headed) retainer’ (often anglicized as Gilroy , Gilderoy , etc., compare Gilderoy n.); compare the English form gilderoy (denoting the fish).
A distinctive form of the brown trout ( Salmo trutta) found in certain lakes in Ireland and (perhaps) Scotland, having a thickened stomach adapted to a diet rich in snails. More fully gillaroo trout.The gillaroo of Lough Melvin, County Fermanagh, has been shown to be genetically distinct from other brown trout, and is now often classified as a separate species, Salmo stomachicus.
