Etymology: < grass n.1 + widower n.1, after grass widow n.Compare German Strohwitwer, lit. ‘straw widower’, married man living temporarily apart from his wife (early 18th cent. or earlier).
A married man living apart from his wife, either temporarily or (sometimes) permanently; esp. one whose wife is away often or for a prolonged period. Cf. grass widow n. 2.
