Etymology: < French grand pas (12th cent. in Old French in le grant pas , 16th cent. in à grands pas , both in sense ‘rapidly’; 19th cent. or earlier in specific use in ballet), lit. ‘great step’ < grand grand adj. + pas pas n.

2. Ballet. A suite of dances that serves as a showpiece for lead dancers, demi-soloists and frequently the entire corps de ballet. Also with capital initials. Cf. pas de deux n.The grand pas traditionally takes different forms: the grand pas d'action, where the dancing and mime sequences advance the story of the ballet, the grand pas classique, where the purpose is simply to showcase classical dance technique, and the grand pas de deux, which serves as the pièce de résistance for the principal male and female characters of a full-length ballet.
