Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: green adj., oak n.
Etymology: < green adj. + oak n. In sense 1 after French chesne vert (now chêne vert ; 1653 in the passage translated in quot. 1660 at sense 1).
1. Any of several evergreen oaks, esp. the holm oak, Quercus ilex. Now rare.
