Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Araneus , -id suffix³.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Araneus, genus name (C. A. Clerck, Svenska Spindlar (1757); < classical Latin arānea spider: see arain n.) + -id suffix³. In original sense after scientific Latin Araneida, former order name. In later use after scientific Latin Araneidae, family name (E. Simon, 1895).
