单词 guntz
释义

guntzn.

Brit. /ɡʌnts/, U.S. /ɡənts/
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish gants.
Etymology: Apparently < Yiddish gants whole < Middle High German ganz (Old High German ganz, German ganz), further etymology uncertain and disputed (see note). With use as noun compare Yiddish dos gantse ( < Middle High German das ganze the whole; German das Ganze), and also Yiddish in gantsn entirely, altogether.Specific collocations. With to go the guntz perhaps compare German aufs Ganze gehen to do a thing completely or thoroughly (18th cent. or earlier; now usually in the sense ‘to risk everything’). Parallels in other Germanic languages. The other Germanic languages lack cognates of German ganz and use forms of whole adj. instead. Old Frisian gans, Middle Dutch gans, Middle Low German gans, ganz, are all < German; early modern Danish ganske (Danish ganske) and Old Swedish ganszka (Swedish ganska) are in turn < Middle Low German. Further etymology. Many suggestions have been made for the further etymology of German ganz, but none of them has been widely accepted. The most probable etymology derives the German word < a suffixed form (with dental suffix) of the Indo-European base of Sanskrit ghana complete, all, (as noun) the lot, Old Church Slavonic goněti to suffice, Lithuanian ganėti to suffice, gana enough + a dental suffix.
British slang. Now rare.
With the: everything possible or available, ‘the lot’. Also in to go the guntz: to do a thing completely or thoroughly.
