Old Frisian gans, Middle Dutch gans, Middle Low German gans, ganz, are all < German; early modern Danish ganske (Danish ganske) and Old Swedish ganszka (Swedish ganska) are in turn < Middle Low German. Further etymology. Many suggestions have been made for the further etymology of German ganz, but none of them has been widely accepted. The most probable etymology derives the German word < a suffixed form (with dental suffix) of the Indo-European base of Sanskrit ghana complete, all, (as noun) the lot, Old Church Slavonic goněti to suffice, Lithuanian ganėti to suffice, gana enough + a dental suffix.
