Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: arm n.1, wrestling n.
Etymology: < arm n.1 + wrestling n. Compare later arm-wrestle v.In quot. 1846, arm-wrestling glosses German Ringen , use as noun of ringen to wrestle (see wring v.).
The action or sport of wrestling only with the arms and hands; spec. a trial of strength in which two people sit opposite each other at a table with one elbow on the tabletop, clasp each other's hands, and try to force each other's arm down on to the table. Cf. wrist-wrestling n. at wrist n. Compounds 4.
