Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans, Etymons: Dutch haakdoorn; Afrikaans haakdoring.
Etymology: In α. forms < South African Dutch haakdoorn (1822 in an English context, or earlier; Afrikaans haakdoring ) < haak hook (see hake n.2 and compare hook n.1) + doorn thorn n. In β. forms reborrowed < Afrikaans haakdoring. Compare hookthorn n. and later hackthorn n.

Any of various trees or shrubs having hooked thorns, esp. the blackthorn, Acacia mellifera subsp. detinens, or similar species of the genus Acacia, and (now less commonly) the grapple-plant, Harpagophytum procumbens. Cf. hackthorn n., hookthorn n.
