Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hackney n., carriage n.
Etymology: < hackney n. + carriage n. Compare earlier hackney coach n.
Originally: a vehicle, esp. a horse-drawn carriage, available for public hire. In later use: a motor vehicle licensed to transport passengers in return for payment of a fare. Cf. hackney cab n., hackney coach n. Now chiefly historical or in legal contexts.
