Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Armeniacus; Greek Ἀρμενιακός.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin Armeniacus of or relating to Armenia, Armenian, and its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek Ἀρμενιακός Armenian < Ἀρμενία (see Armenian adj.) + -ακός -ac suffix.In bole armeniac (see quot. ?a1425 at sense 1) after post-classical Latin bolus armenicus (11th cent or earlier); compare also bolus armenus (see Armenian bole n. at Armenian n. and adj. Compounds). In salt armenyake (see quot. 1526 at sense 1) apparently by confusion with salt ammoniac (compare quot. ?1440 at ammoniac adj. 3 and also sal ammoniac n.). In sense 2 after Byzantine Greek θέμα Ἀρμενιακῶν, lit. ‘theme of the Armenians’.
