Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin Avares (also Abares), plural (6th cent.); of uncertain origin. Compare Byzantine Greek Αὔαροι , plural. In sense 2 < Russian avar member of a people of the North Caucasus (1760 or earlier; plural avary), of unknown origin. Compare German Awar (1760 or earlier).
