单词 hat money
释义

hat moneyn.

Brit. /ˈhat ˌmʌni/, U.S. /ˈhæt ˌməni/
Forms: see hat n. and money n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: hat n., money n.
Etymology: < hat n. + money n., partly after the corresponding use of French chapeau chapeau n. (although this is apparently first attested later than in English: 1723 or earlier), and partly after the corresponding use of Spanish sombrero sombrero n. (1737 in the passage translated in quot. 1755, or earlier). Compare also Dutch kaplaken in the same sense (1575 as †caplaken ; < kap cap n.1 + laken sheet: see lake n.5); see quot. 2011.The semantic motivation is unclear. It has been suggested that the payment was so called because it was dropped into a hat, but it seems more likely to have originated in the custom (mentioned in some 16th-cent. charter parties) of items of clothing, e.g. shoes or a hat, being given to the captain in lieu of payment for loading and taking care of the cargo. With this likely semantic motivation, compare Italian cappa (1818 or earlier in this sense) and Spanish capa (1800 or earlier in this sense), both lit. ‘mantle, cloak’, both specific uses (now historical) of the respective Italian and Spanish nouns cited at cape n.2; compare also e.g. beer money n. at beer n.1 Compounds 2, tea money n. at tea n.1 Compounds 3.
Now historical and rare.
Originally: a payment made by a shipper of goods to the captain of a merchant vessel for loading and taking care of the cargo. In later use also: a percentage added to a freight charge to cover the cost of loading and unloading. Cf. primage n.1 1.
