Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: on- prefix, under prep.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < on- prefix + under prep. In β. forms showing reduction of the first element (see an- prefix1); in γ. forms probably showing alteration of the first element after in- prefix3 (for the phonological reduction seen in en- compare discussion at en- prefix1). Compare anoven prep.Sometimes (as preposition) in postmodifying position (compare quot. c1450 at sense A. 1).
Chiefly Irish English, Scottish, and English regional (chiefly northern) in later use.
A. prep.In Old English (and early Middle English) with dative or accusative.
