Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French Athor; Greek Ἁθώρ; Greek Ἀθὺρ.

Etymology: Partly (i) < French Athor (1782 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek Ἁθώρ, and partly (iii) < Hellenistic Greek Ἀθὺρ (Plutarch). Both Byzantine Greek Ἁθώρ and Hellenistic Greek Ἀθὺρ are < ancient Egyptian ḥwt-ḥr, ḥwt-ḥrw, the name of the goddess (itself a compound meaning ‘house of Horus’). Compare post-classical Latin Athor (1750 or earlier).The (now usual) form with initial h- apparently shows a learned alteration, either directly after the Egyptian form or based on the spelling of Byzantine Greek Ἁθώρ with an initial diacritic (rough breathing: see breathing n. 9) which was silent by that time, but would have been pronounced as /h/ in ancient Greek, the form of the language usually taught by modern classicists. With the form Athyr compare Coptic athyr, which survives as the name of a month (apparently originally with reference to a feast of the goddess).

The name of: the Egyptian goddess of love and joy, variously represented as a cow, or with the head or ears of a cow, or with a cow's horns, typically with a solar disc between them.
