Etymology: < heart n. + bond n.1
1. Bricklaying. A type of bond (bond n.1 13a) in which two headers (header n. 5a) in opposite faces of a wall meet within the centre of the wall, with another header covering the join between them. Now rare.

1819 P. Nicholson Archit. Dict. II. 78/1 Heart-bond, in masonry, the lapping of one stone over two others, which together make the breadth of the wall.
1823 G. Crabb Universal Technol. Dict. at Bond Heart bond is when two stones which appear in the front and rear of a wall meet in the centre of it, and when a third stone is placed over the joint, in order to bind the facing and backing together.
1860–4 Dict. Archit. (Archit. Publ. Soc.) Heart-bond, the construction of walling in which two stones side by side form the width of the wall, and a third stone of an equal breadth is put over the joint in the course above.
1901 R. Sturgis Dict. Archit. I. 327 (caption) The thin course of headers are through stones and form a heart bond with the stones, above and below, which meet at the centre of the wall.
2. A union of hearts; a strong spiritual or emotional connection. Also (occasionally): a betrothal, an engagement.
