Etymology: < classical Latin helluōn-, helluō person who spends immoderately on eating, glutton < helluārī hellue v. + (see -oon suffix). Classical Latin helluō was adopted in scientific Latin as the genus name Helluo (F. A. Bonelli 1813, in Mém. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. de Turin 1811-12, 450); compare sense 2. Compare earlier hellue v.
