单词 hele
释义

helen.

Forms: Old English 1500s (1800s English regional (south-western)) hele, 1900s heal (English regional (south-western)).
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: heel v.1
Etymology: Originally < the same Germanic base as Old English helan (see heel v.1). In later use perhaps also directly < heel v.1With sense 2 compare Old Icelandic hæli shelter, place of refuge. Earlier currency of this sense is probably implied by the following example in which helen (rather than holen , plural of hole n.) is required for the rhyme:c1400 (?a1300) Kyng Alisaunder (Laud) (1952) l. 4950 Ac from her frendes hij stelen, And gon to wood and maken hem holen [probably read helen], And crepen þere-inne. With sense 2 perhaps compare also Irish English (Wexford) hel hollow (early 19th cent.). Other problematic early evidence. The following two examples have sometimes been taken as showing this word (both probably in the dative singular) in an otherwise unattested sense ‘concealment’ (compare Middle Dutch heel (masculine), hēle (feminine), Middle Low German hēle (feminine), Middle High German hæle (feminine), all in sense ‘concealment’, ultimately < the same Germanic base):lOE Laws: Swerian (Rochester) iv. 396 On ðone drihten, ne teo ic N. ne for hete ne for hele [altered from hole; lOE Corpus Cambr. hole] ne for unrihtre feohgyrnesse, ne ic nan soðre nat.?c1225 ( Wulfstan Institutes of Polity (Junius) 81 Helan [altered from holan; OE Hi..mid yfelan holan earme men beswicað].However, in both cases, the English forms are manuscript readings where the source text evidently had forms of Old English hōl vain speech, false accusation, slander (compare hole v.2), which provides a more appropriate sense in the context. It is likely that the forms reflect an otherwise unattested by-form of hōl with i-mutation of the stem vowel (compare Old English (Mercian) hōēlan to accuse falsely, calumniate).
Obsolete. rare (English regional (south-western) in later use).
