Etymology: < late Latin haeresiarcha, < Greek αἱρεσιάρχης leader of a school, chief of a sect, < αἵρεσις heresy n. + -αρχης ruler. Compare French hérésiarque (16th cent. in Littré), perhaps the immediate source.
